How to raise strong writers?
Even before learning to write, children are writers. Their literacy skills start to manifest and develop the moment you can see them scribbling and attempting to write letters. However, writing is not simply just copying an Alphabet off the board or simply tracing the letter A. It is an idea, a thought process, a symbol to express themselves and to convey knowledge.
By the age of 2 ½ or 3, small muscles in a child are developed which enables writing. We may be unaware but there are several ways your child develops writing skills, gradually. The environment itself enables the child to learn how to write. A curious child in pursuit of chasing a ball or a family pet is forming a connection between the mind and body, developing hand-eye coordination. Anything that the child grips, may it be a ball or little knobs, he or she is developing control which will help develop pencil-holding ability. Before writing the child needs to strengthen their fine motor skills using these activities to promote pincer-grasp.
7 activities to promote pincer-grasp that you can do at home with your child:
- Play-dough: Play-dough, slime and clay, these are easily available at home for your child to play with. He can create different animals, lines, numbers or shapes.
- Stringing bead activity: You will need any kind of string with a knot in the end and a couple of beads. For younger children you can use a thicker string (Shoe-lace or a yarn) and bigger beads. The child carefully, one by one, threads the first bead on to the string slowly. This activity promotes bilateral coordination and confidence.
- Lacing cards: Use sturdy cards with geometrical shapes with holes punched in them and a string such as a shoelace or a yarn. The children can start weaving through the holes in the card. Just as stringing beads this activity also promotes bilateral coordination.
- Art and craft activities: Get large paint containers, water colors or crayons. The child can use large crayons and draw different shapes and sizes on a large paper.
- Pom-poms: They can use pom-poms to create art and craft or transfer them to different containers.
- Tongs can be used to promote pincer-grasp and tripod grasp essential for hand-writing. They can even use pom-pom transfer activity with tongs.
- Opening and closing boxes: An array of boxes or containers at home for the child can be used, which will strengthen the wrist and hand muscles. These are the different hands-on activities that you can easily find at home or use in a fun way to develop essential writing skills in your child. These tasks are very simple but in the end of the day when your child accomplishes these tasks, it is very full filling.
